The History Of Desserts

History of Macaroons
Macaroons originated in an Italian Monastery around 1790. The name comes from the Italian word for paste, maccarone, which refers to the almond paste.

Later, two Carmelite nuns seeking refuge in the town of Nancy during the French Revolution, paid for their housing by baking and selling macaroon cookies. They became known as the "Macaroon Sisters". As the story goes, the nuns followed the principle: "Almonds are good for girls who do not eat meat".

History Of Cookies
Americans consume over 2 billion cookies a year! So who is responsible for creating America’s favorite dessert and snack?

Cookies were created almost by accident. Early bakers would place a small amount of cake batter into their oven to test the oven’s temperature before placing the large cake in the oven. These small cakes were called “test cakes.” These test cakes became what we know today as cookies.

The word cookie originated from the Dutch word “Keokje” which means little cake. It was the Dutch that first introduced the cookie to the United States. We now know these original cookies brought over by Dutch immigrants as butter cookies. However the very first cookie is linked to seventh century Persia as Persia was one of the first countries to cultivate sugar.

According to culinary historians the birth of the Chocolate Chip Cookie took place right here in the United States. In the 1930’s an innkeeper in Massachusetts, Ruth Wakefield, ran out of nuts while she was baking cookies. She replaced the nuts by breaking up baking chocolate into the dough. This became named as the Toll House Cookie, named after the Inn where it was created and served.

It is amazing all the cookie recipes that have evolved over time. No one cook book can hold all the cookie recipes we have today.Cookies Around The World

History Of Brownies
America is credited for the origin of brownies. There are many folklore tales about how brownies evolved from either cakes or cookies, the most popular story tells of a careless baker who forgot to put baking powder in chocolate cake batter. Instead of discarding the flat cake, the baker cut the cake into squares and served it as individual pieces. No one person is credited with the origin of brownies as there is not one known.
